Mount Fuji and Tokyo skyline
It’s an odd feeling to visit a place you’ve always wanted to visit for the first time. For me, that place was Japan; a place that had been calling my name for years and was on my bucket list. I knew this trip would be unforgettable, but I never imagined it would so profoundly change my perspective on luxury, hospitality, and the good life.
Stepping into Japan, I felt like I had entered a world crafted with meticulous attention to detail and precision. From the meticulously maintained roads (hint: there are no trash cans – to keep the streets clean and reduce urban waste) to the polite greetings of the people, it was clear that this is a country where tradition and modernity coexist in perfect harmony. My trip to Japan was more than just a vacation; it was an awakening to a new standard of excellence, where luxury is not just about luxury, but about thoughtful considerations that enhance the overall experience. This ethos was reflected in every hotel I stayed in, each of which offered a unique perspective on what it means to live well and truly savor the moment.
Up, up and away.
But before I even set foot in Japan, my journey took a luxurious turn when I boarded Turkish Airlines for the first time. Though I had traveled in business class before, I never anticipated the level of luxury that awaited me on this flight. From Washington Dulles to Istanbul to Tokyo, I experienced an experience that redefined in-flight dining. The highlight? I had a personal chef on board, cooking restaurant-quality meals in the air. Imagine savoring perfectly cooked lamb chops and delicate seafood while cruising at 35,000 feet. It was a dining experience that set the tone for the rest of my trip and a preview of the luxury to come.
A quiet hideaway in the heart of Tokyo.
My first stop was The Prince Park Tower Tokyo, located in the heart of the city. The moment I entered the lobby, I immediately felt a sense of tranquility. The hotel’s design is modern yet understated, with a focus on creating a calm oasis in the middle of the bustling city. My room, located on a high floor, offered a breathtaking view of Tokyo Tower. At night, the tower was lit up like a lighthouse and I was mesmerized by its glow.
One of the highlights of our stay was dining at the hotel’s signature restaurant, BIMITASA, where flavorful Chinese cuisine is served with an elegant Japanese twist. The culinary experience here was simply magnificent, with a menu that celebrated the fusion of these two rich culinary traditions. Each dish was meticulously crafted to perfectly match taste and presentation. From the delicate balance of flavors in the dim sum to the refined techniques showcased in the seafood dishes, every bite was a testament to the chef’s skill and artistry. Dining at BIMITASA felt like an intimate journey through the fusion of Chinese and Japanese culinary traditions and was one of the standout experiences of our stay.
The amenities at The Prince Park Tower were equally impressive. The hotel features a full-service spa, a fitness center with panoramic city views, and a wide range of dining options from casual to fine dining. The hotel’s location is perfect for exploring the city, with Shiba Park, Zojoji Temple, and Roppongi all within walking distance.
The Prince Park Tower’s hallmark is its balance of luxury and comfort. The staff were polite and helpful, making me feel at home and catering to my every need. This hotel is perfect for travelers looking for a peaceful retreat without sacrificing the convenience of being close to Tokyo’s main attractions.
A historical gem in Kyoto.
After two nights in Tokyo, I took the Shinkansen to Kyoto and checked into Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu. This beautifully restored boutique hotel, once a school, retains its historic charm while providing all the modern amenities. As I walked the corridors, I could feel the history inscribed on the walls, a reminder of Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage.
Hotel Seiryu is an intimate and elegant hotel with just 48 rooms, designed to reflect Kyoto’s traditional aesthetic. My room featured tatami mats, shoji screens, and a deep soaking tub overlooking a private garden. It felt like a tranquil space transported back in time, yet with all the comforts of modern luxury.
One of the most unique and relaxing experiences at Hotel Seiryu is the 90-minute Healing Bath. This deeply rejuvenating experience is designed to soothe the body and mind. The bath combines natural minerals with traditional Japanese bathing techniques to provide holistic relaxation. As I soaked in the warm, mineral-rich waters, I felt tension melt away and left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. This experience was a highlight of my stay and the perfect way to unwind after a day exploring Kyoto.
The hotel’s rooftop offers stunning views of Kyoto, including Kiyomizu-dera Temple in the distance. In the evening, the rooftop bar becomes a cozy spot to enjoy a cocktail while taking in the city’s night lights. During my stay, I also had the opportunity to experience a traditional tea ceremony in the hotel’s tea house. It was a beautiful and meditative experience that deepened my appreciation for Japanese culture.
The Higashiyama area is rich in history, with narrow alleyways lined with traditional wooden houses, teahouses and temples. A short walk from our hotel brought us to the famous Gion district, where we spent the afternoon wandering the charming alleyways and soaking up the atmosphere of old Kyoto.
Hotel Seiryu is the perfect choice for those wishing to immerse themselves in Kyoto’s cultural heritage while enjoying the comfort of a luxury hotel. A beautiful juxtaposition of history and modernity, this location offers a unique perspective on Kyoto.
A sanctuary high in the sky.
Our final stop was The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, where we spent three nights in what can only be described as a sanctuary in the sky. Located on the upper floors of a skyscraper, the hotel offers some of the most amazing views of Tokyo I have ever seen. Our room overlooked the sprawling cityscape with the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Bay in the distance.
Prince Gallery is the epitome of modern luxury, with sleek contemporary design elements and cutting-edge technology in every room. The hotel’s wellness center is a particular highlight, featuring an infinity pool that blends into the sky. There is also a spa, sauna, and a fitness center with the latest equipment.
One of the most memorable experiences during my stay was dining at the hotel’s Japanese restaurant, Washoku Soten. The culinary experience here was exceptional, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. Every dish was a work of art in appearance and taste. Not only was I left feeling satisfied with every meal, but I was also impressed by the creativity and care that went into each course.
Prince Gallery is located in the historic, upscale residential area of Kioicho, perfect for exploring both old and new Tokyo. A short walk will take you to Akasaka and Nagatacho, where you’ll experience the political heart of Tokyo and numerous upscale shops and restaurants.
What’s truly special about The Prince Gallery is that it offers a sense of tranquility amid the hustle and bustle of Tokyo – a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle and feel totally at peace after a day exploring the city.
As a black woman visiting Japan for the first time, I felt welcomed, respected, and cared for at each of these hotels. The hospitality I experienced was unparalleled, and each hotel offered a unique experience that satisfied both my desire for luxury and my curiosity about Japanese culture. From the tranquil retreat of The Prince Park Tower, to the historic charm of The Hotel Seiryu, to the modern elegance of The Prince Gallery, each hotel left an indelible mark on my journey.
Japan is a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. It is a country where old and new blend together to offer a unique perspective on luxury, hospitality and culture. If you are looking for a truly transformative experience, these hotels should be at the top of your list. These hotels didn’t just provide me with a place to stay, they changed my brain chemistry and left me with memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
