EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – The Mount Horeb Area School District will receive federal funding to help students recover following a mass shooting in May.
According to an Aug. 20 news release from Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s office, the district will receive $118,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s School Violence Emergency Response Program, or Project SERV.
According to a news release, Project SERV “provides funding for short-term education-related services to school districts and institutions of higher education to help them recover from violent or traumatic events that have disrupted learning environments.”
Mount Horeb Area School District will use the funds to cover the salary of a school social worker at Mount Horeb Middle School and to provide trauma-informed educational resources, training and conferences for staff.
“We are extremely grateful for the Department of Education’s support in strengthening our district’s support for both our staff and students. This funding will allow us to further invest in professional development and a full-time social worker position, further enhancing a sense of community and belonging within the Mount Horeb Area School District. The responses provided by staff and families to our post-May 1 planning survey were essential in building a comprehensive support system,” said Dr. Steve Salerno, Superintendent of Mount Horeb Area School District.
