The conflict has forced 90% of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to flee, according to UN figures. The army has repeatedly accused Hamas of operating from inside civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, including schools, UN facilities and hospitals. Earlier this month, Israeli airstrikes struck a school in the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing 14 people, according to Palestinian medical sources. The Israeli army said it was targeting Hamas fighters who were planning attacks from inside the school. In July, an Israeli airstrike struck a girls’ school in Deliverah, killing at least 30 people who had taken shelter inside the school. The Israeli army said it targeted a Hamas command center that directs attacks on Israeli forces and stores “large amounts of weapons.” The war began when Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians. Hamas has abducted another 250 people and is holding around 100 hostages. At least 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations in Gaza, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. The ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.
