The National Theatre comes to the United States for the first time in 32 years. See a spectacular rendition of traditional Japanese puppet theater featuring two classic climaxes from the Bunraku repertoire: “Date Musume Koi no Higanoko” and “The Love Suicides at Sonezaki.”
Bunraku, invented in the mid-18th century, is known for its globally influential three-person puppetry technique and has been designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The production, with set design by Oga Kazuo, art director of Studio Ghibli’s animated classics “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Princess Mononoke,” offers Americans a rare glimpse not only into Bunraku but also into the rich culture of Japan’s second-largest city ahead of Osaka’s 2025 World Expo.
