Jacqueline Giacalone, president of the William Floyd High School Business Academy, recently appeared on LI News Radio’s “Spotlight on LI Schools,” a weekly show highlighting great things happening in Long Island schools. Giacalone discussed the various Business Academy opportunities available to William Floyd High School students that will serve them well into their careers after graduation and throughout their lives.
Sponsored by the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association (N-SSBA), the program will be hosted by Robert Vecchio, executive director of the N-SSBA and former trustee and president of the William Floyd Board of Education. During the interview, Giacalone and Vecchio discussed the Business Academy’s programs, which are designed to offer students a variety of options to help them fulfill their elective requirements while gaining college- and career-related skills that will help them in their future endeavors.
During the interview, Vecchio was asked what his top advice would be to parents of kids who will be freshmen and sophomores at William Floyd High School.
“Start with personal finance. That’s the most important class,” Giacalone replied, adding that she has heard time and time again from parents that they want their kids to have the opportunity to learn how to manage their money effectively and responsibly. Personal finance covers a variety of topics, including balancing a checkbook, writing checks, savings accounts, insurance and investing.
In addition to personal finance, William Floyd High School Business Academy courses include College and Career Readiness, Accounting, College Accounting, Music Business, Business Ownership and Management, College Business Law, College Business Mathematics, Entertainment Marketing, Everyday Law, Fashion Marketing, International Business (English and Spanish), Leadership by Design, Applications of Mathematics, The Office, Reality of Real Estate, Social Media, Sports Marketing, Video Game Design, Virtual Enterprise, Wall Street, Asset Management, Web Design and more.
Many courses also offer college credit, and the Business Academy offers three graduate tracks: Accounting, Small Business Management, and Microsoft Office Specialist.
