A Maryland high school student was shot and killed by another student Friday during a fight in a school bathroom, authorities said.
Warren Curtis Grant, 15, was killed in the shooting at Joppatowne High School, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said at a press conference.
A 16-year-old student, whom police identified as the shooter, fled the scene shortly after but was arrested nearby minutes later.
“He has not yet been charged, but charges will be filed and we will release the suspect’s name at the point he is charged as an adult,” Gahler said.
Gahler also said there have been more than 10 cases handled by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office since 2022 where the suspect was a victim, witness or suspect, adding that the investigations are still in the early stages.
Shortly after the shooting, the sheriff’s office urged people to avoid the area but stressed that the incident was “an isolated incident and not the work of a single active shooter,” a term police often use to describe incidents in which an attacker fires randomly at victims, rather than targeting specific individuals.
A reunion center for parents and students was set up at a nearby church, and more than 100 personnel were dispatched to the high school, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Baltimore, Gahler said.
The unrest came two days after a gunman, whom authorities identified as a 14-year-old student, shot and killed four people at a high school outside Atlanta, Georgia. Wednesday’s attack has reignited debate about safe gun storage and has parents pondering how to talk to their children about school shootings and trauma.
