GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center football team overcame an early deficit to score 21 straight points and beat Dike New Hartford 21-7 on Friday night in its season opener.
The Spartans looked to junior quarterback Judd Zirofsky to pull off their fifth win against the Wolverines in the past six meetings. Zirofsky completed 10 of 13 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns, both of which were caught by senior wide receiver Tiernan Vokes. Vokes had seven catches for 122 yards and Devin Hinders had three catches for 67 yards.
Zirofsky ran 12 times for 48 yards and a touchdown on a two-point conversion run to also lead the Spartans in rushing. Brody Zinkula added 42 yards and Pete Lebo 34 yards.
Lebo led the Grundy Center defense with 5.5 tackles, including one tackle for loss.
Dyke New Hartford’s lone scoring play was a Collin Meester touchdown pass to Devin Lotz in the first quarter, accounting for 40 of the team’s 183 yards of total offense.
East Marshall 19, BCLUW 7
CONRAD — The East Marshall football team defeated BCLUW 19-7 on Friday night to record their fifth win in the past six games in the series.
The Mustangs scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 7-6 deficit.
East Marshall senior Drew Wheater ran 17 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns, while Xavier Slifer ran 14 times for 55 yards and one touchdown.
East Marshall quarterback Jake Farrington was 5 of 12 for 71 yards and one interception, while Eli Barnes led the receivers with three catches for 50 yards.
BCLUW’s touchdown came on a 5-yard run by Wyatt Gould in the third quarter, and Owen Myers’ extra point kick gave the Comets the lead.
BCLUW quarterback Carson Wayman completed 7 of 11 passes for 41 yards and three interceptions (one each from Barnes, Farrington and Blake Newroth). Ethan Petermeyer rushed nine times for 47 yards and Gould finished with 21 yards and one score.
Wheater and Wyatt Stalzer led the East Marshall defense with 8.5 tackles apiece, while Shaston Gammert added seven stops.
Emmett Petermeyer led BCLUW with 7.5 tackles, including one tackle for loss. Meyers had an interception and Lucas Bevard recovered a fumble.
Nevada 33, West Marshall 7
Nevada State — Nevada State racked up 396 yards of total offense in a 33-7 win over the West Marshall football team in Friday’s season opener.
In a balanced Cubs attack, tailback Anthony Eaton rushed 23 times for 206 yards and all five of Nevada’s touchdowns. Quarterback Connor King completed 14 of 24 passes for 184 yards and four interceptions, which led to West Marshall’s only touchdown of the game.
Kinnick Gears intercepted three passes on the Trojan defense and returned one for a score, while Caden Fantz also had an interception.
West Marshall quarterback Michael Leckneill led the Trojans with 111 yards rushing and Ben Gonzalez also rushed for 40 yards. Leckneill finished the game completing 4 of 12 passes for 40 yards with two interceptions. Holden Sims led the Trojans in catches with one pass for 15 yards.
Shane Hanford and Lec Neal each led the West Marshall defense with eight tackles, while Gonzalez recorded 7.5 stops.
Roland Story 47, Minamitama 0
STORY CITY — Roland Story dominated the South Tama football team for the second straight year, defeating the Trojans 47-0 in Friday’s season opener.
The host Norsemen led 17-0 at halftime and scored 21 points in the third quarter to seal the game.
South Tama was held to just 95 yards of total offense, with senior quarterback Cody Blocker completing 7 of 12 passes for 88 yards. Nick Upah led the Trojans with 66 yards on two catches.
Marcus Baer led the STC defense with 10 tackles, including three tackles for loss, and one quarterback sack. Brocker and Upa added one sack each, and Tyrus Clegg had a 43-yard interception return for the Trojans.
Hudson 18, North Tama 0
TRAYER — North Tama’s offense was limited to 78 yards of total offense in an 18-0 loss to Hudson in the season opener on Friday night.
The visiting Pirates racked up 215 yards rushing and 134 yards passing. Quarterback Kean Kreil rushed 24 times for 120 yards and a touchdown and completed 5 of 14 passes for 134 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
The Redhawks were limited to just three yards rushing, but senior quarterback Colt Knack completed 9 of 23 passes for 75 yards and one interception. Josh Dostal had four catches for 40 yards and Tyrus Rooker had three catches for 31 yards.
Gavin Rausch led the North Tama defense with nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss. Kaylor Morris and Clayton Williams both had interceptions and Griffin Hall had a fumble recovery for the Redhawks.
