Daniels, Sports Director, a legend in the sports broadcasting world. He is remembered not only as a consummate professional, but even more so as a great husband, father, mentor and friend. He passed away a few weeks ago in California after suffering a massive heart attack. Jonah, after speaking with several members of the sports community who called Daniels’ death a great loss, WDSU’s Jonah Gilmore will be on live. Well, Daniels, Gina, spent a lot of time covering the Saints at the Superdome, but also covering the high school football championship games. Everyone knows and loves high school sports, and people are saying it wouldn’t be the same if they couldn’t see him this season. Just knowing him makes you proud. He is a true giant in sports journalism. He will be greatly missed. Legendary sports anchor Eddie Daniels is remembered as a giant of his profession. He would cover high school on Friday nights until 2 in the morning, get up early in the morning to do radio appearances, college coverage, go to Baton Rouge, drive back, cover the Saints, get on a plane. And that’s it. A graduate of Lamell High School and Loyola University, he loved all sports but is known for bringing high school football into the spotlight with his Friday Night Football show, which ran for more than 30 years. He approached high school coverage the same way he covered the Saints at Louisiana State and Tulane. So, again, we all have our own specialties. But Eddie was Mr. Prep. Jerry Phillips is definitely the head coach at Warren Easton High School. He says it was an honor to have Daniels cover the team because Daniels knew Phillips from when he was a student. I was one of the scholarship athletes that week. I was interviewed and we kept in contact all the time. We just got along. We had a really good relationship. Phillips looked forward to watching Daniels’ show because he appreciated the feedback and he got to see how other teams performed. But if Daniels doesn’t attend high school football, something feels wrong going forward. Daniels was serious at work, but friends say he had a bright personality. But he was very humble, had a great sense of humor, and always called me. Hey Jay, what do you think of the team? By the way, how about the bowling team? Editor, since the news of his death was reported, messages of condolence from major sports teams, universities, and high schools have flooded social media. He is remembered as a hard worker, but those who knew him well remember him as a man who valued family and faith. It was great to see him and his wife enjoy a little European travel in his later years. I talked to Ed more about traveling than sports. The sports world says his death is a great loss, but it will honor this man who was so important to so many people. A great man, a great husband, a great friend, a great New Orleans athlete. Tonight, the City of New Orleans expressed its condolences and said it will miss him dearly. Rest in peace. Daniels was 67 years old.
