ABTA’s Travel Trends 2025 report reveals changes in traveler behavior, highlighting the rise in long-distance travel, luxury stays and romantic getaways.
The British Association of Travel Agents (ABTA) has released its Travel Trends 2025 report, predicting significant changes in traveler preferences and behavior. More than a third of travelers plan to travel to long-haul destinations outside of Europe and North America, according to the report. This means an increase from 28.2% last year to 34.2% in 2025.
Asia is expected to see the biggest growth in tourist numbers, with nearly 10% of travelers looking to Asia as their next destination, up from 8.9% last year. Popular hotspots in the region include Japan, Thailand, India, and China. Africa and Oceania are also expected to grow in popularity, with 7% and 6% of travelers heading there respectively. Oceania’s attraction is primarily driven by interest in Australia.
Trends for 2025 also highlight a growing interest in ‘vacations’, with more couples choosing to travel together. This trend has increased from 40% to 44% over the past year. Notably, parents are also embracing the concept, with 29% of parents having traveled as a couple in the past year, up from 21%.
Luxury travel is a new focus in 2025, especially among Gen Z travelers. More than 20% of this demographic plans to increase their vacation budget to improve their accommodations. Comparatively, this trend is less pronounced among Millennials (14%), Baby Boomers (11%), and Gen Xers (8%).
The report was launched during ABTA’s annual Travel Trends conference on 26 November 2024 and included insights from industry leaders. Graham Buck, ABTA’s communications director, highlighted the important role of travel agents and tour operators, providing expert advice and tailored support in turning travel aspirations into reality.
Overall, ABTA’s findings suggest that adventure and luxury travel is on the rise, with many prioritizing unique experiences, luxury stays and romantic getaways. To meet these evolving demands, the travel and hospitality industry must continue to adapt to these new preferences.
