Welcome back. OU is about to make a splash in the SEC. And it’s not just a metaphor. The SEC is now adding rowing to its list of sponsored sports. COCO KYLIE THOMAS spoke with the Oklahoma Rowing head coach about what this new chapter will bring for OU. At OU, the athletes are training for a new era as they row in the SEC. From the open waters of the Oklahoma River to their training facilities, Oklahoma Rowing has performed at a high level. But now the program will test new territory in the SEC. This is how we create championships separately and truly at the next level. In what I think is a much bigger deal than anything that’s been done nationally, the SEC announced rowing as the 22nd sport sponsored by the conference. This makes rowing the 13th women’s sport to select a conference champion. It’s a sport that’s not very familiar to the SEC, so I wasn’t sure how they would vote or what they would think. Before Texas and Oklahoma came on board, it took a lot of really strong women to make it happen and win. So I think it’s the perfect sport for the SEC. Oklahoma will join the other three SEC representative teams — Texas, Alabama and Tennessee — in hosting the first conference championship next May. This meet is going to be unique because these four schools are probably the most dominant and serious teams. And, you know, with rowing looking to the future, with river sports and access to an Olympic-sponsored training center, Oklahoma rowing is expected to have an advantage on the water. Our community is centered around rowing. So I think that automatically benefits, momentum when we compete against other schools. From Kylie Thomas, Coco Five News: Yes, it’s a great facility right on the Oklahoma River. It’s so amazing. Rowing is hard work. It’s hard work. It’s hard work. You remember me watching this and everyone complaining about not being able to play in Oklahoma City. Well, wait until we beat Oklahoma City with a boat. Who else has a facility like that? Nobody. That’s right. I don’t know.

“This is a way for us to create our own, next-level championship, and I think it’s far better than anything in the country,” OU rowing head coach Sarah Trowbridge said. “Before Texas and Oklahoma came on board, the sport was so foreign to the SEC that we didn’t know how they would vote or what they would think.”
