Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula 6-3, 7-5 at the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio, on Monday to win her first title since the Australian Open in January.
Sabalenka, ranked No. 2 before the match, did not drop a set on her way to winning her 15th WTA title. She had never advanced past the semifinals in Cincinnati, losing three times before.
The 26-year-old Sabalenka is considered the favorite to win the U.S. Open, which begins in New York on Aug. 26. She missed Wimbledon with a shoulder injury but returned to the tour in Washington two weeks ago.
University
Football: Furman University football helmets this season will feature a sticker in memory of defensive lineman Bryce Stanfield, who died Feb. 9, two days after collapsing during a workout at the school’s stadium.
Furman University announced two weeks later that Stanfield’s cause of death was a pulmonary embolism unrelated to football.

NHL: The Columbus Blue Jackets traded forward Patrik Laine to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenceman Jordan Harris and a 2026 second-round draft pick.
The Blue Jackets spent most of the 2023-24 season without the 26-year-old Laine, who sought help from the NHL’s Player Assistance Program in January and said his issues were mental health-related. He was cleared in July.

USA Men’s: The U.S. will play Mexico in an exhibition match on Oct. 15 in Guadalajara in what could be a second match for Mauricio Pochettino, who is in negotiations to become U.S. national team manager.
The USA will play Canada on Sept. 7 in Kansas City, Kansas, before facing New Zealand three days later in Cincinnati. It will be their first games since the U.S. Soccer Federation fired coach Gregg Berhalter following the team’s first-round exit from the Copa America. Berhalter’s assistant, Mikey Balazs, will likely manage the team in September.
Henry resigns: After leading France to a silver medal at the Olympics, Thierry Henry stepped down from his coaching post, with the French Football Federation citing personal reasons for his departure.
PREMIER LEAGUE: Jamie Vardy earned Leicester a point on their return to the Premier League, scoring with a second-half header to secure a 1-1 draw against Tottenham after they dominated the first half.

Vuelta a España: Overall leader Wout van Aert won the third stage with a sprint finish in Castelo Branco, Portugal.
Van Aert, wearing the leader’s red jersey, surged into the lead with about 250 meters to go and edged out Australia’s Kayden Groves, overturning the results of Sunday’s second stage, which Groves won in a sprint.
Team change: After winning three medals for Australia at the Olympics, track cyclist Matt Richardson changed teams eight days later to compete for Great Britain.

WNBA: Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon again disputed former Ace player Dearrica Hamby’s claims that the team mistreated her and traded her because she was pregnant.
Hamby, who was traded to Los Angeles in January 2023, played for the organization from 2015-2022 when the Aces were based in San Antonio. She was the league’s sixth player of the year award winner in 2019 and 2020 and won a bronze medal in 3×3 basketball at the Paris Olympics.
