Linda Ronstadt slammed Donald Trump in a lengthy Instagram statement ahead of his election event on September 12 at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall in Tucson, Arizona. The singer wrote that she would “like to ignore” Trump’s event, but “the building has my name on it so I have to say something.”
“It is sad to watch the former president stage this hate show in Tucson,” Ronstadt continued. “Tucson is a city with deep Mexican-American roots and a bright, generous spirit. I don’t just condemn his toxic politics, his hatred of women, immigrants and people of color, his crime, dishonesty and ignorance, although I do those too. To me, it all boils down to this: In Nogales and across the southern border, the Trump Administration systematically ripped apart migrant families seeking asylum.”
“By separating families, thousands of toddlers and babies have been orphaned and desperate mothers and fathers have been subjected to brutal treatment,” she added. “This case, which Physicians for Human Rights said met the standard for torture, remains a humanitarian catastrophe. We can never forgive or forget the heartbreak he has caused. Trump first ran for president warning of an influx of rapists from Mexico, and I am concerned about not putting a rapist in the White House.”
Ronstadt then sent a message to Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, saying, “I’m a single mother raising two adopted children in Tucson, both grown and living in their own homes. I live with cats. I’m unmarried and have never had children, so am I half a childless cat-loving woman?”
Ronstadt’s statement comes in the midst of a significant week for singers speaking out against President Trump. Taylor Swift formally endorsed Kamala Harris for president on September 10 and spoke out against President Trump, who used a fake image of her early on in the campaign trail.
“I recently learned that an AI of ‘me’ was posted on his site falsely endorsing Donald Trump for president,” Swift wrote. “It really brought back my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. I’ve come to the conclusion that, as a voter, I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election. The easiest way to combat misinformation is to tell the truth.”
After Swift endorsed Harris and urged her fans to make sure they register to vote before the election, Steve Nicks posted his own statement on social media, echoing Swift’s call to register to vote.
