The 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive, with its eye-catching Blue Bay Lagoon Metallic finish and Black Alcantara/Veganza interior, is the newest compact SUV in BMW’s lineup. It’s designed to provide an exhilarating driving experience and versatility for everyday use. We tested the model for a week, and it was equipped with a host of options that enhance both its aggressive stance and luxury feel.
Improved aesthetics and performance
This X1 comes with the Driving Assistance Pro package ($1,700) that offers a suite of semi-autonomous driving features such as Active Lane Keeping Assistant, Traffic Jam Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go function. These systems make driving more reliable, especially in heavy traffic situations that require constant attention.
To complement that performance, the M Sport Professional Package ($1,100) added red brake calipers, extended Shadowline trim, and subtle yet aggressive touches that make the X1 stand out, while the Premium Package ($2,800) added creature comforts like a panoramic moonroof, head-up display, and surround-view camera, giving the driver more control when parking and driving, improving the overall experience.

Small additions like remote start ($300), 20-inch MY Spoke bi-color wheels ($600), and elegant eucalyptus open-pore wood trim ($200) add convenience and style. I was hoping for the calming effects of the eucalyptus, but the jerky shifts of the dual-clutch transmission put no real damper on my plans to relax.

Driving dynamics: power and agility combined
The 2024 X1 M35i xDrive truly embodies BMW DNA with sharp handling and a thrilling driving experience. It’s powered by the most powerful four-cylinder engine in BMW’s arsenal, delivering 312 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The dual-clutch seven-speed transmission can be jerky at low speeds, but shifts are quick and precise when needed. There’s noticeable turbo lag, but once the turbo starts to spool up, this SUV accelerates briskly, sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph.

The Adaptive M Suspension balances ride comfort with sportiness to deliver an agile, engaging driving experience. Whether navigating city traffic or twisty roads, the X1 M35i is reminiscent of the precision BMWs of old.
Comfort and Convenience Features
Though it’s a high-performance SUV, the X1 M35i doesn’t sacrifice comfort. The Premium package adds features that enhance the driving experience. The panoramic moonroof lets in natural light, making the cabin feel open and airy, while the head-up display provides important driving information without taking your eyes off the road. The Harman Kardon Premium Sound System delivers rich audio for comfortable long drives or daily commutes.

The interior camera is a unique feature that allows for anti-theft recording, giving you peace of mind when your car is parked in an unfamiliar location. The heated front seats and steering wheel are comfortable in cold weather, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration makes connecting your smartphone a breeze. The wireless charging setup is the best I’ve tested, and the phone holder keeps your device securely in place, even during the most vigorous driving.

Safety features: peace of mind at any mileage
BMW has equipped the X1 M35i with strong safety features: Forward Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation and Active Blind Spot Detection help prevent accidents, while Lane Departure Warning keeps the driver centered on the road. Surround View with 3D View offers a 360-degree camera perspective that is extremely useful when navigating tight spaces.

The Driving Assistance Pro package enhances these features by adding Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and Steering and Lane Control Assistant, enabling semi-autonomous driving on highways. This package also includes Traffic Jam Assistant, which is useful for long commutes in congested traffic, allowing hands-free driving below 37 mph while maintaining lane discipline and a safe following distance.

Driving assistance package: enhancing the dynamic experience
What sets the X1 M35i apart from other compact SUVs is that its driver assistance systems don’t just provide convenience, they also contribute to a dynamic driving experience. The Active Lane Keeping Assistant and the Steering & Lane Control Assistant really come into their own when driving on winding roads and on the highway. These systems provide subtle steering inputs, keeping the car responsive and reducing fatigue on long journeys.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function is particularly useful in stop-and-go traffic, adapting your speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and stopping automatically if necessary. Accessed via the paddle shifters, the M Sport Boost function switches all powertrain and chassis systems to their sportiest settings at the push of a button, making sudden acceleration even more thrilling.
Verdict: The perfect versatile sports SUV for everyday driving
Overall, the 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive delivers a balance of sportiness, technology and comfort that’s unmatched in the compact SUV market. With a base MSRP of $49,900 (plus $995 shipping), it offers an engaging driving experience without the steep price tag of full-fledged M models. For BMW enthusiasts looking for a spirited daily driver that doesn’t compromise on practicality, the X1 M35i is an appealing choice. It offers modern comfort and convenience while capturing the essence of BMW’s performance heritage. It’s a well-rounded choice for those who want the best of both worlds.
