๐โโ๏ธ Gretchen Walsh: 1 match, 11 world records
American swimmer Gretchen Walsh set 11 world records (9 individual) and won 7 gold medals (5 individual) at the Short Course World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, making history in the sport’s history. I had a great week.
Her final stat sheet:
50m freestyle: Gold (2 WRs)
100m freestyle: gold
50m butterfly: Gold (2 WRs)
100m butterfly: Gold (3 WRs)
100mIM: Gold (2 WRs)
4ร100m freestyle relay: Gold (1 WR)
4ร100m medley relay: Gold (1 WR)
Greatest encounter ever? Mark Spitz set seven world records at the 1972 Olympics, and Michael Phelps set eight world records at the 2008 Olympics. These are widely considered to be the two greatest performances in major international swimming history, and Walsh beat them both.
Yes, but it’s not quite the same. The Short Course World Championships, first held in 1993, were held in a 25-meter pool rather than the 50-meter pool used at the Olympics and World Championships, and typically had fewer talented athletes in this field (for example, Katie Ledecky never participated).
Two of Walsh’s individual titles came in events not on the Olympic program (50m butterfly, 100m IM), and in the absence of the Paris gold medalist, he won the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. I won.
Walsh, 21, may also have benefited from a “faster” pool. More than 25 world records were set in Budapest, the most in the history of the Short Course World Championships, and Jordan Crooks of the Cayman Islands became the first swimmer to break 20 seconds for 50 meters. Freestyle.
American royalty: Short course or not, Walsh is simply phenomenal, joining Phelps and Ryan Lochte as the only Americans to win five individual gold medals in a single championship. Ta. โHonestly, Iโm a little unsure of myself,โ said the Nashville native, who is in the midst of her senior season at the University of Virginia.
What’s the next big thing? Walsh made her Olympic debut in Paris and won four medals (a silver medal in the 100m butterfly and three medals in the relay) while competing alongside her sister Alex. All signs point to her being one of Team USA’s brightest stars at LA 2028.
