Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs went down with a non-contact knee injury late in the team’s 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon.
Diggs sprained his right knee while trying to cut on a route late in the third quarter at NRG Stadium. He began jumping around, reaching for his knee, then collapsed onto the field in obvious pain. Diggs eventually stood up and walked to the locker room.
The Texans (6-2) initially listed him as questionable to return due to a knee injury, but he was removed from the team late in the fourth quarter. Details of his injury have not been released.
Diggs entered this season with 42 catches for 415 receiving yards and three touchdowns, his first with the Texans. On downs, he had five catches for a team-high 81 yards.
Texans fend off Colts late
Anthony Richardson and the Colts were close to a comeback Sunday afternoon.
After leading by seven points at halftime thanks to the Texans scoring 14 points in the second quarter, the Colts came close to a field goal midway through the fourth quarter with Jonathan Taylor’s 1-yard touchdown run. The touchdown was scored by Josh Downs’ spectacular 25-yard catch, but after a review, Downs almost scored himself before the play was called at the half-yard line. Downs managed to stretch back and get the ball right over Texans safety Jalen Pitre.
C.J. Stroud and the Texans responded with a long eight-play drive that lasted more than five minutes, taking it into the red zone, and looked poised to score again and tie the game.
But that was when the Texans almost gave up on it. Stroud went to throw the ball to Joe Mixon, who threw the ball into the arms of Colts defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo. After Odeyingbo hit the ball on his facemask, he actually ran the ball into the opposite end zone. However, as a result of the examination, it was determined that the patient was down due to contact.
The Texans immediately backed up Richardson near their own end zone after the sack, forcing Indianapolis to punt. The Colts got the ball back one last time after the Texans punted it, but they were not left with enough time to get into field goal position to extend the game. The Texans held on and won by three points.
The Colts fell to 4-4, and Richardson was just 10-of-32 for 175 yards, including a touchdown and one interception. Taylor had 105 rushing yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, and Downs had 109 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches.
Stroud finished 25-of-37 for the Texans, throwing for 285 yards and a touchdown. Mixon had 25 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown. The Texans are 4-0 at home this season. They next face the New York Jets (2-6) on Thursday night.
