Political leaders around the world, including Israel, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Italy, have begun congratulating President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory.
The Republican and former reality TV star won the victory Tuesday, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris with 270 electoral votes and returning to the Oval Office. This was a historic reversal and a painful blow to the Democratic Party, which won Wisconsin and handed Mr. Trump a second non-consecutive term.
As the rest of the world woke up to the news Wednesday morning, world leaders began sending messages of congratulations to President Trump. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote about Elon Musk’s X: “We appreciate President Trump’s commitment to a ‘peace through strength’ approach in world affairs. This is the very principle that could effectively bring a just peace in Ukraine closer.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said President Trump had made the “greatest reversal in history.” He also said in “X”: “Your historic return to the White House marks a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to America’s great alliance with Israel. This is a huge victory!”
In the UK, Prime Minister and Labor Party leader Keir Starmer, who has been a vocal opponent of Trump in recent years, sent a message to the president-elect before the results were officially announced. “Congratulations to President-elect Trump on his historic election victory,” Starmer wrote on X. “I look forward to working with you in the years ahead. As our closest allies, we will stand shoulder to shoulder in defending our shared values of freedom, democracy, and enterprise.”
French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “ready to cooperate” with President Trump. “We’re ready to work together as we’ve known how to do for four years,” he said. “With your faith and my faith. With respect and ambition. For greater peace and prosperity.”
Italy’s right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulated Italy and the United States, saying they had a “solid alliance.” She continued: “This is a strategic bond that I am sure will be further strengthened in the future.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the friendship between Canada and the United States as “the envy of the world” and congratulated President Trump, saying, “President Trump and I are committed to creating more opportunity, prosperity and security for our two countries.” I know that we will work together to create that.”
Germany’s Olaf Scholz wrote a similar message to European countries. “Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on his election as President of the United States. For many years, Germany and the United States have successfully worked together to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to work for the health of our people. I will come.”
European Union President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated President Trump “warmly”. “Let us work together on a transatlantic partnership that continues to serve our people,” she said, adding that “millions of jobs and billions in trade and investment on both sides of the Atlantic depend on the dynamism and stability of our economic relationship.” I am doing it.”
