World Athletics is one of the nominees for ‘Elite Organization of the Year’ at this year’s BBC Green Sport Awards.
Launched in 2022, the annual awards celebrate individuals and organizations around the world who are actively contributing to a more sustainable future through their sporting profile and practices. Through the Green Sport Awards, BBC Sport aims to celebrate the good news of athletes, former athletes and organizations working hard to make a difference and inspire.
The Elite Organization of the Year award recognizes a professional or high-performance sports organization involved in the organization or planning of competitive sport that has actively demonstrated support for environmental and climate change issues over the past 12 months. and awards to sports organizations.
The initiative that got the World Athletics shortlisted includes a system to assess the environmental, social and local economic impacts and benefits of an event, and is built into the event bidding and licensing process. Includes the introduction of athletics competitions for world standards and their champions. Participate in the Better World program, which encourages athletes to speak out about environmental issues. World Athletics’ consistent spotlight on climate issues and their impact on sport was also cited as a reason for the nomination.
Other nominees include motorsport series Extreme E, organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) and World Rugby.
Australian race walker Rhydian Cowley, bronze medalist in the marathon and race walking mixed relay at this year’s Olympics, is a finalist in the World Athlete of the Year category. Cowley is a member of the World Athletics Champions for a Better World program and was nominated for her work advocating for climate change and promoting environmental sustainability at both a local and global level.

The winners will be announced live on stage at London’s BBC Radio Theater on Monday 7 October, on the eve of the annual Sports Positive Summit, which opens at Keir Oval on 8 October.
Separately, World Athletics has also been shortlisted for the Transformation Award at the inaugural Sport Positive Awards, which will be announced on October 8th at London’s Kier Oval.
Jackson Twei, vice president of World Athletics and president of Athletics Kenya, was also nominated in the “Regional Leader Africa” category. A full list of nominees for the Sport Positive Awards can be found here.
