A California woman outsmarted two would-be thieves by mailing herself a package with an Apple AirTag inside in an attempt to track down the people who stole her mail.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office announced that 27-year-old Virginia Francesca Lara of Santa Maria and 37-year-old Donald Ashton Terry of Riverside were arrested and charged with multiple counts including possession of fraudulent checks, credit card theft, identity theft and conspiracy.
At approximately 7:20 a.m. on August 19, police responded to a report of mail theft at the Los Alamos Post Office and were called to the scene.
When police arrived on scene, they discovered the victim had recently had multiple items stolen from his post office box and had mailed himself a package containing an AirTag locator device.

Officers then discovered the package containing the locating device had been stolen.
After investigation, the suspects were found on E. Sunrise Drive in Santa Maria and were found to be in possession of the victims’ mail, which contained air tags and several other items believed to have been stolen from over a dozen victims, according to the sheriff’s office.
Lara was ultimately charged with possession of a check with intent to defraud, counterfeit check, identity theft, credit card theft, and conspiracy. She was booked into the Northern Branch Correctional Facility and held on $50,000 bail.

Terry was booked into Northern Branch Correctional Facility on charges of theft, possession of a fraudulent check, credit card theft, identity theft and conspiracy.
He was found to have multiple theft-related arrest warrants out of Riverside County and was being held on $460,000 bail.
The Sheriff’s Office commended the victim for her investigation, crediting her for conducting a careful investigation and contacting the Sheriff’s Office to successfully apprehend the suspect.
