If you buy solar eclipse glasses, stick to them! Details of future solar eclipses!
There is a partial solar eclipse that occurs immediately – and yes, you still need solar eclipse glasses!
The first partial solar eclipse of the year took place on March 29th and should already be effective by the sunrise in North America. During this time, the sun will look like a crescent moon, but the sun will not be completely covered, so viewers will need to wear protective glasses.
These ISO certified solar excavation glasses are available to buy now.
A partial solar eclipse can occur up to twice a year, so having a pair on hand is not a bad idea!

Your local library
Thanks to tips from the HIP2Save reader, we found out that many libraries carried free solar glasses last year! A total solar eclipse has passed, but solar observations are always fascinating! You may be able to check if your library is involved in the library’s solar day activity (seal) program and get the pair for free!
Astronomical Club or Solar Eclipse Ambassador
The Pacific Astronomical Society recruited Eclipse Ambassadors to provide free solar glasses and other resources to underserved communities. For maps of solar eclipse ambassadors near you, please visit their website.
Finally, check out your local Zoo, museums, universities and educational institutions as well as local planetariums and astronomy clubs to see if you have any leftovers from last year’s total solar power generation.
What is a partial solar eclipse?
When the moon passes between our planet and the Sun, a partial solar eclipse occurs, but the three bodies are not completely lined up. Therefore, the moon blocks only part of the sun and will likely appear as a crescent shape.
Partial solar eclipses usually occur twice a year.
What happens when you see a partial solar eclipse?
Because the sun is not completely covered, viewers should always see a partial solar eclipse of sun with protective glasses. These glasses are thousands of times darker than average sunglasses and can help prevent damage such as retinal burns and loss of central vision. It is important to note that you cannot even see the solar eclipse through the camera without using a special lens.
“Can I use polarized glasses for a partial solar eclipse?”
no! To make it safe, we recommend getting special solar excavation glasses instead. These glasses are much darker than regular sunglasses and follow the international standards of ISO 12312-2. You can purchase these special solar glasses from the American Astronomical Association’s list of approved suppliers.
When was the solar eclipse in 2024?
Total solar eclipses were seen in Mexico, Canada and the United States on Monday, April 8th. The solar eclipse was first seen on Mexico’s Pacific coast at 11:07 PDT, approximately 11:07 PDT, and then began the 1:30 CDT in South Texas in the US. The solar eclipse passed 13 states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Visit the NASA website to see the complete path of the solar eclipse and the exact times shown at specific US locations.

Are you wondering what to do with your unused solar eclipse glasses?
Non-profit astronomers without borders are gathering glasses to send around the world for people to use during upcoming solar eclipse events. Head to your local Warby Parker to donate your glasses, or if you live in Indiana, Ohio, or Vermont, there are additional donation spots. Alternatively, you can send glasses to Eclipse Glasses in the US, sending them to school-aged children in Latin America to see the solar eclipse of the October 2024 sun.
