WHEELING, WV – One week ago, the Wheeling University Athletics Department welcomed back the Wheeling football team for report day, and on Friday the rest of the fall sports programs will return to campus to prepare for the 2024-2025 season. Men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s rugby, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s cross country will all report and begin training camp.
The 2023 Fall season was another successful one for the Cardinals, with two teams competing in their respective conference tournaments, and volleyball and men’s rugby each competing in the national tournament. Wheeling volleyball won their 10th consecutive MEC (Mountain East Conference) championship, defeating West Virginia 3-1 in the MEC volleyball tournament. On the pitch, Wheeling rugby won their first ever Big Rivers Rugby Conference (BRRC) 15-man championship. Both teams competed in their respective regional tournaments, but unfortunately both ended their seasons in the quarterfinals. The cross country and golf teams each competed in the MEC championship events, with the women’s gold earning the highest placement with a 4th place overall finish.
Teams will report on Friday, with each team given a week of training camp before classes officially begin on Aug. 26. During that week, teams will get their new players acclimated while also getting themselves in shape for the 2024 season. Bishop Schmidt Field will be the practice site for the continued preseason for men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s rugby, and Wheeling football teams. Inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center, Wheeling volleyball will practice, with the final two practice locations being off campus. The golf team will train at Wheeling Country Club, and the cross country team will hold its annual weekend retreat to kick off fall camp. All players will report to the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Friday to begin their journey to the postseason.
Players will report to campus between 9 a.m. and noon on Friday, Aug. 16, with practices set to begin next week.
