President Donald Trump asked Ukrainian President Voldymee Zelenkiy to leave the White House on Friday after the pair engaged in a close exchange in an oval office. The unexpected collapse of the conference sent shockwaves through the political and diplomatic spheres of the world.
Scripps News talks with Professor Roman Shellemeta, an associate professor of Ukrainian Nationals and Economics at Case Western Reserve University, about what comes next.
“Even yesterday, I was speaking on National TV in Ukraine, so I told them that the deal might not pass because of the last minute that could happen.
“At the same time, I was shocked because I didn’t think this could happen. I thought there could be an additional point in negotiations, but I didn’t expect this to be a complete exchange that happened at the White House.”

Sheremeta revealed that while US arms and aid helped Ukraine fight Russia, Ukraine spent time resisting Russia early in the war.
He also opposed Vice President J.D. Vance’s criticism of Zelensky against Zelensky, who accused Vance of conducting propaganda tours.
“I think there’s hope for the future,” Sheremeta said. “He has promised to stop the war, so there will be pressure on President Trump. The war will continue and more people will die. Now to support Ukraine.”
