Henrietta – One by one, teary-eyed members of Westfield basketball team have been removed from the locker room and find family and friends in the lobby of the Rush Henrietta High School gymnasium on Saturday night.
When the day began, Wolverine truly believed that he would play another week of basketball before them this winter.
Honeoye had other ideas.
The Bulldogs sank 7 of 10 free throws in the final 1:14 of the game, surviving the highest scorer ever in Section VI with 1.8 seconds left, beating Westfield 64-60 at Class C Far West Regional outside Rochester.
The victory concluded Honeoye’s second trip to the Athletic Association’s semifinals at New York State Public High Schools, the first time since 1985.

“We knew these kids were going to work incredibly hard,” said head coach Rob Delisanty of the post-game match. ”… We played 34 games together during the offseason. We knew it was good. ”
For Wolverine, the loss ends the season and the loss of five seniors. This includes five seniors, including Carson Swanson, the school’s highest ever scorer who finished second in Western New York history with 2,448 points.
“Like the past two weeks, we’ll get through this and practice another week and play again,” Westfield head coach Nolan Swanson said. “It’s a great group.”
Two statistics were essential to Westfield’s downfall. Seventeen sales and one-fourth shootings were filmed on the foul line.
“As a coach, I was a bit underestimated by them so I didn’t fully prepare us,” Swanson said.

The Bulldogs led up to 10 bulldogs midway through the fourth quarter before things started getting much tighter.
Carson Swanson made it 56-49 with 3:48 left on a 3-pointer, and after a free throw from Landon Washburn in Honay, Zach Maguire hit a 3-pointer to make it a 5-point game.
“It was a typical game for so many people who come to him,” Nolan Swanson said of his middle son, Carson. “He sees open people and takes the ball to the right place.”
Swanson then converted a three-point play to 57-55 at 2:36 left, with Maguire still in touch and then made a free throw to give Wolverine a 58-57 lead and Westfield’s first lead, 18-16 at the beginning of the second quarter.
However, Wolverine couldn’t perform the stretch even though a pair of Bulldog starters had fouled consecutive possessions.
“We fouled out two guys all year round, but we had two fouls tonight,” Delisanti said. “I really don’t know what happened, but Swanson probably had something to do with it.”
Braiden Schneider tied the game 58-All with free throws with 1:14 left, and Westfield handed over the ball on the next possession. Sophomore Washburn, who finished with a game-high 28 points, made one of two free throws to give the team a 59-58 lead.
“He’s going both ways. He’s heavy and quite offensive,” Nolan Swanson said of Washburn. “To be honest, when we played him well, Ouger hit some shots. I wasn’t watching it to that extent. They made too many shots.”
The Wolverines were emptied on their next trip, with Dylan Washburn adding a 18.8 seconds remaining Honey’s free throw.
Swanson then made a one-point game with free throws, and Westfield grabbed an offensive rebound before a point-blank layup mistake that gave Wolverine the lead.
“We had a lot of possibilities for a particular play to work,” Nolan Swanson said. “But sometimes people have to hit the opposite shot or the back shot or catch it in strange places, which makes shots difficult.”
Dylan Washburn sinks two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining, and Westfield needed a miracle.
It almost came as Swanson was fouled on a three-point attempt at the top of the key and was fouled with 1.8 seconds left. However, after his first free throw fell, the second glanced from the rim. Swanson’s third attempt required a deliberate mistake to get the ball back.
“Finally there were four sophomores on the court,” Delisanti said. “They didn’t stop and didn’t fold.”
The Bulldogs inbound, and Schneider hit a pair of free throws, sealing off Wolverine’s fate.
“You sometimes disagree with that,” Nolan Swanson said, “and it didn’t bounce back.”
Honeoye will perform at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton with the first state title in program history next weekend.
”…In Section V, you have to face 36 other schools to get out and go to the far western region,” Delisanti said. “That’s not an easy task.”
The Bulldogs will take on the winner of today’s quarterfinals between Cooperstown in Section III and Moravia in Section IV. On the other side of the bracket is the Tuckahoe in Section I and the Berne-Knox-Westerlo in Section II.
“They’re a great team. The Swanson kids were the best players we’ve faced all year round. They were huge. Maguire and (Grant) Beadle are huge,” Delisanti said of the Wolverine. “They are the biggest teams we’ve played all year round and the best team.”
Note: Carson Swanson had 23 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and eight steels. Maguire had 13 points and nine rebounds. Braylon Swanson scored 10 points at Westfield. Westfield shot 19 out of 51 from the field. …Schneider scored 15 points and Dylan Washburn had 10 for Honeye. This shot 22 out of 46 from the field.
