This year, 114 schools received the Outstanding School Award, including Westfield Academy and Central School.
Westfield Academy and Central School has been notified by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association that the district has been recognized as a School of Excellence in recognition of the academic excellence achieved by students and staff.
According to District Superintendent Michael Cipolla. “100% of our varsity program (10 teams) was on the academic honor roll.”
Cipolla said he informed the school board about this prestigious award on Aug. 26 and said everyone was very happy and grateful. “We are grateful to the NYSPHSAA for recognizing our student-athletes, staff, and community with this worthy award.” he said. “Our students continue to shine in every aspect of their education and make us proud.”
According to the NYSPHSAA, the purpose of the School of Distinction Award is to unite athletic departments and challenge teams to earn statewide academic honors. This year, 114 schools received the Outstanding School Award.
WACS athletic director and men’s varsity soccer coach Neil Hoover said Westfield was just one of eight Section 6 schools to receive this award. To receive this award, all national teams must achieve the following status: “Scholar Athlete” This means that 75% of your team members must achieve an average score of 90 or higher.
“What we emphasize every year is that our athletes are student-athletes. Grades come first.” Huber said. “This speaks volumes about their hard work and dedication to education. . . . Westfield students are amazing kids, and this accomplishment is a direct result of their hard work.”
WACS Secondary Principal Corey Markham agreed. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication our students put into achieving their best performance every day.” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of their academic accomplishments last year, including earning high proficiency and proficiency scores on the Regents exam.”
Huber said the award also reflects the dedication of WACS faculty and staff. “This tells us as teachers that we have the tools and abilities to help kids achieve great things.” he said. “Hats off to all the staff, from maintenance to the administrative team, for providing our students with a safe place to do their best.”
Markham also emphasized that the staff and faculty set high standards for students. “Our coaches understand that being a scholar-athlete begins in the classroom and ends on the athletic field or hardwood court.” he said.
Huber said he was not surprised that Westfield had won the award, since the students had submitted documentation at the end of June showing they had achieved this goal. Markham also had words of praise for Huber. “As athletic director, Mr. Hoover has set the direction for our athletics program and the standards we expect from our students and their coaches.” he said.
Mr. Hoover concluded by stating that the continued focus on quality education will continue at WACS. “I am so proud to be a member of the faculty and staff at Westfield University, and I am so proud of the kids who accomplished this amazing feat.” he said. “We look forward to hosting it again next year.”
