The Ryan Murphy-produced show premieres next month on FX.
The tragic life of late football player and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez will be told in FX’s new series American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez, directed by Ryan Murphy this summer. The 10-episode limited series premieres on September 17.
The trailer for the show, which Murphy is executive producing, shows Hernandez, played by Josh Andres Rivera, struggling with mental illness, battling temper tantrums, suffering from the physical trauma of playing football, and, of course, brandishing a gun. Patrick Schwarzenegger plays Tim Tebow on the show, and Tammy Blanchard plays Hernandez’s mother, Teri. And everyone in the clip seems caught up in the tension. It’s the kind of trailer where a clock chimes behind the scenes, and the sound gets faster and faster as the pitch rises in the background, hinting at an explosive ending.
“You have no idea what I’m thinking,” Hernandez says in the trailer. “Like the devil.”

Interestingly, Murphy isn’t covering this case under the banner of American Crime Story. The football player joined the New England Patriots as a tight end in 2010. Three years later, he was arrested and charged with the murder of his friend, Odin Lloyd. He committed suicide in prison in 2017. His death came two days after he was acquitted of a separate double murder charge. A post-mortem examination revealed that Hernandez had severe stage 3 CTE, a type of head trauma common in football players.
According to Variety, Stuart Zickerman developed the show based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football, Inc.” The series follows another show about Hernandez, “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez,” which premiered on Netflix in 2020.
