atlanta – A Buckhead start-up business was forced to close Tuesday after robbers used a getaway car to break into the storefront. Atlanta police are currently investigating the early morning incident.
Sharif Deshazor, owner of PriceTag ATL, told FOX 5 this is the third time they have been targeted in recent months. Surveillance video captured the incident in real time.
“It’s hard to recover from losses like this one after the other,” Deshazor said in an interview Wednesday.
Deshazor came to Atlanta with entrepreneurial dreams and opened his store earlier this year.
“I moved here from New York with the goal of becoming an entrepreneur and seeking the opportunities that Atlanta offers,” Deshazor said.
He told FOX 5 that dream has become a nightmare in the few months since the luxury consignment store opened for business.
“When someone drove a truck into the store, they basically just tried to destroy it and rob it,” he said. “This is not what we had in mind.”
Surveillance camera footage from early Tuesday morning showed the robbers backing the SUV into the building and then speeding away.
“It’s very unfortunate that we continue to deal with this issue in our community,” he told FOX 5.
Deshazor said this isn’t the first time a store selling high-end streetwear and sneakers has been hit.
This last robbery occurred just a week after purchasing a new security system.
“This has happened twice in the last 30 days. The first time was like a very big loss,” he recalled.
Deshazor said it will be difficult to get the business back on track given the damage to the building and theft of property.
“It’s well beyond a six-figure loss. It’s easy,” he explained.
His message to other business owners is to “keep your eyes peeled.”
He says those in charge should think twice about taking money away from small and medium-sized black businesses.
“I hope we can use this as a tool to come together as small businesses and just as a community,” he added.
At this time, the reopening date of the store is undecided. Deshazor said the company is considering opening an online store for the time being.
APD investigators have not said whether there is a connection between this incident and other similar robberies reported in recent weeks.
