The Warren girls tennis team defeated Elk County Catholic 5-0 on Monday at Betts Park.
“We have a lot of games coming up this week so it’s nice to start the week off with a win.” “It’s a big part of what we’ve been doing,” Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino said.
Lucy Harrison started off the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Grace Ames at No. 1 singles.
In second singles, Ella Card defeated Melena Picchirillo 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, Alanna Garza fought hard to beat Ana Viandy 6-3, 7-5.
“Alanna is our best doubles player, but when we had to make a last-minute adjustment due to a player being sick, she volunteered to play (third singles). This sophomore has already shown great leadership.”
At No. 1 doubles, the pair of Maddie McDunn and Sarah Harvey defeated the pair of Audrey Meyer and Arianna Grosik, 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, the pair of Grace Carlson and Anna Courson defeated the pair of Emma Lepke and Jolene Lippy, 6-0, 6-0.
“Those two guys played great tonight and were in sync the whole game.” Pellegrino said.
The Dragons improve to 6-1 on the season and will face defending D10 3A champion Fairview at home today.
“We drew with them last season and have always played tight, competitive games against them over the last few years.” Pellegrino said. “We have a lot of respect for their program and we’re looking forward to playing against them. … This is our first year in 3A, so this will be our first test of how good we are in the district.”
