MauGhan said in his first investigation that he had submitted all 20 names to US patents and trademark bureaus. But the biggest rejection was for “Yeti” or “Yetis”. Even among Utah players, it was widely expected that “Yeti” or “Yetis” would ultimately win as a team name.
The USPTO refused the trademark application from the UTAH YETIS team because of the “confusion” for other companies and brands that use names. Utahokke Club was trying to use “Utise” for various clothing. The USPTO stated that the database search was “in this case, many third -party marks registered for use in connection with the products of both applicants and registrants and/or services.”
Among these parties, there is Yeti Coolers LLC and manufactures drinks, coolers and clothing.
“We have been deeply involved with Yeti Cooler Company and cooperated with them through the process to see if there is a coexistence agreement that can be involved with them,” says MauGhan. “They have a unique and powerful trademark about the published Yeti or Yetis. Since there was no coexistence agreement with Yeti, we decided to proceed from the name.”
MauGhan said that the team is expecting a “Yeti” or other trade mark hurdles. This is the need to pivot, including the rejected but not a focus on the barriers to future approval. He said the team was convinced that the three names of fan voting should clear the USPTO process.
“We are convinced that we have incredible teams and have a clear path to each name,” he said. “We have a strategy to approach each and go forward.”
Fan voting with a new name begins during the match with Pittsburg Penguin on Tuesday night.
Utahokke Club is the first season to play in Salt Lake City. Arizona Coyote franchise was sold in April 2024 to the Smith Entertainment Group, the owner of Utah Jazz. 。
