Utah may have some stability to lead the men’s basketball program.
CBS analyst Jon Rothstein reports that Aggies has finalized a new contract with Jerrod Calhoun and is keeping him as the program’s head coach. Rosstein posted a report on social media site X early Tuesday morning. No official announcement was made Tuesday afternoon.
Calhoun just finished his first season with Logan and led the Aggies to a 26-8 record. USU received a massive bid for the NCAA Tournament and was blown away by seven UCLAs as a 10 seed.
Utah State hired Calhoun in 2024 after its coach led Youngstown State for seven seasons. Calhoun was highly rumoured as the top candidate for the opening in West Virginia.
Such an extension would prevent Utah from having to hire a new head coach for the fourth time in the last five years. After Craig Smith did the same job in Utah and signed three years at Logan, the Aggies hired Ryan Odom, who coached USU for two seasons, and Danny Sprinkle led the Aggies in the 2023-24 season alone before leaving for Washington.
According to a report by Rothstein, a new contract with USU’s Calhoun will make him the second-best paid coach at Mountain West, behind Brian Dutcher in San Diego.
Calhoun, 43, said USU offered him a “risqué opportunity” for a new contract as the Salt Lake Tribune headed for the NCAA Tournament.
Fremont alumni receive honor
Former Fremont High and Utah footballer Nick Vigil are recognized by the National Football Foundation’s Utah branch, including a banquet on Tuesday night.
This chapter gives you a “famous American Award” vigil. Previous winners of that award include Steve Young, Bobby Wagner, Kyle Van Neu, Eric Weddle, Steve Smith and Andy Reed.
The linebacker played nine seasons in the NFL with five teams, most recently in 2024 for Dallas.
Haloti Ngata has received a group’s contribution to the Amateur Football Awards. High school coaches Bill Jacobsen (Bear River, Pine View, Snow Canyon) and official Kelly Holman each receive outstanding services to Utah’s amateur football.

Report: Utah is targeting NBA GM
Alex Jensen is currently gathering staff at the University of Utah men’s basketball, with a new report featuring UTES, which targets NBA front office veterans as general managers of the program.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel posted on X on Tuesday. Utah plays a role targeting Wes Wilcox. Wilcox is the current assistant general manager of the Sacramento Kings. During his 20 years in the NBA, he is also the general manager of the Atlanta Hawks. Thamel reports that he will become the highest-ranking NBA front-office worker to move into the GM role at university.
In university sports, the role of the general manager differs, but usually includes a combination of contribution and payment oversight, transportation portal management, and fundraising.
