A woman who admitted to drinking alcohol, drove well over twice the speed limit and crashed into a golf cart, killing her newlywed bride, was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison. It was.
Jamie Lee Komorowski, 27, pleaded guilty in Charleston County Court before sentencing to two counts of reckless homicide, felony DUI causing death, and two felony counts of DUI causing serious bodily injury.
Police said she had been drinking at several bars on April 28, 2023, and was driving at 105 mph on a narrow road in Foley Beach, where the speed limit is 25 mph, when she was leaving a golf course as she was leaving a wedding venue. The vehicle reportedly collided with a cart.
The bride, Samantha Miller, 34, died wearing her wedding dress. The groom suffered a brain injury and multiple fractures. The collision threw the cart 100 yards (91 meters).
According to reports in June, groom Aric Hutchinson will receive $863,300 in settlements related to the wreck. Hutchinson spoke about losing his wife, calling her “an amazing human being who should never have been taken away.”
In an interview with ABC, he broke down in tears as he struggled to remember the incident. “The last thing I remember her saying was I wish the night never ended,” Hutchinson told Good Morning America (GMA).
“I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. It’s pretty hard to try to understand that we went from an all-time high to an all-time low that night,” Hutchinson said on GMA, but the Comoros Mr. Ski declined to comment.
After pleading guilty, Komorowski said he realized he was an alcoholic and didn’t care how his actions affected others. She vowed to spend the rest of her life helping addicts and warning them of the dangers of drunk driving. She said she was “devastated, deeply ashamed and sorry” for her actions.
“I wish I could go back in time and undo this terrible tragedy. But I can’t. I will live the rest of my life bitterly regretting what happened that night.” she said.
Before sentencing, Ms. Miller’s father told Ms. Komorowski that he was tired of her seemingly never taking responsibility. He told her she could apologize, but he wouldn’t listen.
“I’m going to hate you for the rest of my life, and when I get to hell and you get there, I’ll open the door for you,” Brad Warner said. “You have ruined many people’s lives.”
Komorowski, 27, pleaded guilty in Charleston County Court to two counts of reckless homicide, felony DUI causing death, and two felony counts of DUI causing serious bodily injury.
The bride’s mother previously slammed Mr Komorowski for making a “fatal choice”.
“It wasn’t a coincidence,” Lisa Miller told Fox News. “This person chose to drink, get behind the wheel, and abuse my daughter. This was a conscious choice made by a young woman.”
