The Secret Service shot an armed man near the White House, the agency said.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on Sunday, following a “armed conflict” with law enforcement, according to the agency.
The incident occurred near the intersection of 17th Avenue and F Street NW. It is less than a 5-minute walk from the White House.
Local police had reported “suicides” that could travel from Indiana to Washington, D.C., the agency said. Secret Service officers then found the man’s car and on foot who met the local police explanation.
“As the officers approached, individuals wore firearms around, armed conflicts continuing, during which the shots were fired by our staff,” the Secret Service said in a statement on the X posted by spokesman Anthony Grielmi.
The suspect was taken to hospital and his condition is unknown.
A Secret Service statement said no injuries were reported among personnel and the incident is under investigation.
Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident as he was visiting his Florida home this weekend, Mal Arago.
In recent years, there have been a series of incidents involving an armed man who was shot by an armed man who was shot on or near the White House premises, including a 2016 shooting in which a handgun was swinging a handgun at or near the White House security gates.
In 2023, a 20-year-old Indian immigrant tried to break through the White House’s protective barriers with rental trucks.
Trump himself survived a small assassination attempt in July. That’s when a gunman fired at him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, causing his ear to be damaged. A review of the Secret Service found that communication gaps and lack of diligence contributed to near misses.
