A gynecologist has been arrested for sexually abusing four women in Memphis, Tennessee, and reusing unsanitary medical devices using unnecessary procedures.
Sanjeev Kumar, 44, has been charged with sexual abuse, medical fraud and illegally reusing unsanitary medical devices after tempting four women to travel across state lineages to his clinic, and being sexually abused in medical procedures.
Kumar’s arrest adds to a series of US cases involving doctors being accused of violating patients at least at the most vulnerable moment.
Between 2019 and 2024, Kumar is said to have performed unnecessary gynecological procedures using medical devices that were held in unsanitary conditions and inappropriately reused.
According to indictment authorities obtained against him, Kumar, 44, did not inform the patient of the practice before inserting the device during the procedure. Kumar, who worked at the Poplar Avenue Clinic, claimed the federal Medicare and Medicaid insurance program for the hysteroscopy biopsy service, as if treatment was medically necessary and as if he was using new or properly sterilized equipment.
According to Johns Hopkins’ medicine, hysteroscopy is a procedure used to examine the interior of the uterus, and involves inserting a thinly illuminated tube into the uterus via the vagina and cervix.
“Kumar is the top Medicaid pay provider of Medicare and hysteroscopy biopsy services in Tennessee and has effectively benefited from these criminal activities,” said Reagan Fonden’s US attorney for the Western District of Tennessee. “The allegations show that Kumar acted as a white coat predator, using medical test covers to put patients at risk and enrich themselves.”
A special agent responsible for Joseph E. Carico, the FBI’s Nashville Field Office, said there could be additional casualties.
“It’s important to remember that Dr. Kumar is your fault or something that has never happened before,” Kariko said. “We’ve had voices important over and over again, and those who have moved forward have empowered others to do the same.”
