The U.S. Attorney General announced Wednesday that the Trump administration is suing New York state for immigration policies, accusing state officials of choosing to “prioritize illegal foreigners over American citizens.”
Standing in front of federal agents tasked with helping Trump crack down on immigrants, Pam Bondy vowed to take on a community that blocks federal immigration efforts, he said, “The Justice Department vows to take on a community that blocks federal immigration efforts.” I repeated it.
Bondi said she was about to end New York’s “green light” law. The law was partially enacted to improve public safety on the roads. Because people without a license did not pass road tests or because people without a license sometimes drove. The state also makes it easier for holders of such licensees to get auto insurance and thus reduces crashes involving uninsured drivers.
“It’s stopping,” Bondi said. “It’s stopping today.”
The lawsuit describes the law as “a frontal attack on federal immigration laws and the federal authorities controlling them.” It highlights a provision that requires state Motor Vehicle Department commissioners to inform people illegally in the country when federal immigration agencies request information. The Department of Justice is asking the courts to break the law. (The lawsuit is civil rather than criminal, but Bondi caused confusion by saying the Justice Department had “slammed” against New York.)
Bondy announced in July 2022 with the Tammy Nobleman who was killed by someone in El Salvador who illegally entered the country in Aberdeen, Maryland by his 20-year-old daughter in Texas.
Bondi’s politically charged rhetoric is not uncommon for institutions that have historically been wary of direct alignment with the White House. . New York Attorney General James sparked Trump’s rage by suing him, leading to a civil fraud ruling that would cost him nearly $500 million.
In a statement, James said he is ready to defend state law, saying he “protects the rights of all New Yorkers and keeps the community safe.”
The lawsuit comes days after the Justice Department sued the city of Chicago, claiming that its “sanctuary” law hampers federal efforts to enforce immigration laws.
