The United States has been a partner to Georgia and Georgians for more than 32 years. Our partnership is rooted in our common love for freedom and democracy and our desire to bring Georgia into the Euro-Atlantic family. We have worked together with successive Georgian governments and the Georgian people to develop Georgia’s economy, improve its education system, strengthen its defense capabilities, and expand its health and agricultural sectors. The United States strongly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and our commitment to the brave Georgian people and their Euro-Atlantic aspirations is unwavering.
The United States strongly condemns the Georgian Dream party’s brutal and unjust violence against Georgians, protesters, members of the media, and opposition forces. We call on Georgian Dream to end its repressive tactics, including the use of arbitrary detention and physical violence, to silence critics. We are particularly concerned about reports of people being seriously injured at the hands of law enforcement. Those detained for exercising their human rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression must be immediately released, and officials responsible for the unlawful use of force must be held fully accountable.
The United States stands in solidarity with the Georgian people and their aspirations for democracy. Those who undermine Georgia’s democratic processes and institutions, including those who suppress Georgians’ rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, will be held accountable. In addition to continuing its previously announced comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation, the United States is now preparing to utilize the tools at its disposal, including additional sanctions.
