Ranked No. 1 in the nation three years in a row, UW’s real estate program is the largest in the nation and has been in existence for more than 120 years, said program director Tim Kerr.
“Even the (schools) that come in, say, No. 2 or No. 3, we are many times bigger than them,” Kerr said.
The real estate program, derived from the Wisconsin School of Business, is the school’s third largest major after finance and marketing. This program focuses on real-world applications and preparing students for the realities of the real estate market.
“Once our students leave us, will we be able to get to work right away?” That’s our focus. And we’ve made significant changes to our curriculum over the last few years to focus directly on that,” Kerr said.
These curriculum changes include experiential and applied learning, as well as capstone courses that change annually to ensure students receive real-time education, Carr said.
“It’s difficult to teach, because every semester you have to prepare for such cases and it’s new. But for the students, it’s applied, it’s up-to-date; It’s a reality,” Carr said.
The real estate program funds student trips to Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis to observe different types of real estate development. The purpose of these free trips, Carr said, is to encourage students to think about what aspects of real estate interest them.
Kerr said there were clubs associated with real estate programs that initially made these trips, but the clubs typically required payment.
Mr Kerr said inclusivity and equal opportunity were key concerns for the real estate program.
“You can go on trips through some clubs, but you usually have to pay a fee. We wanted to make it a priority,” Carr said.
According to Kerr, it is the faculty and alumni who make the real estate program what it is. Faculty and alumni are a resource to help students succeed, especially for real estate programs.
“Our classes, for example, are a little more specialized,” Carr said. “We also didn’t have any tutors given to us by universities or business schools, so we actually created our own tutoring program to be able to support our students.”
Regarding the importance of these rankings, Mr. Kerr spoke about their involvement in student enrollment, arguing that researching rankings is a good first step in the college decision process and can initially help increase student enrollment.
“When students start taking a class, they decide whether it’s for them or not. So in the long run, we may have people coming to our school from other schools, but if we If they were ranked No. 5, would they come here instead of other schools? But I think over time that will affect some people,” Carr said. .
