united nations:
Russia and the United States clashed at the United Nations on Tuesday, accusing each other of supporting terrorism during a Security Council meeting convened over the sudden escalation of fighting in Syria.
Syrian rebels captured Aleppo last week in an offensive launched by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, it was al-Qaeda’s official wing in Syria until its dissolution in 2016. Authorized by the United Nations Security Council.
Robert Wood, the US deputy ambassador to the United Nations, called for a reduction in fighting in Syria and the protection of civilians. He also expressed concern that the rebel attacks were being led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
“The fact that HTS is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the United Nations does not justify further atrocities by the Assad regime and its Russian backer,” Wood said, adding that Syria’s Bashar al-Bashar・Accused President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and Russia of causing casualties to civilians in Syria. Attacks on schools and hospitals.
In a statement to Mr Wood, Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia said: “You muster up the courage to condemn an apparent terrorist attack carried out against peaceful civilians in a peaceful Syrian city. I couldn’t do it,” he said.
“I have no illusions that the U.S. government will sincerely fight international terrorism,” he said. “Frankly, we’re happy to be on the other side of the barricades from you right now.”
In response, Wood accused Nebenzia of being “in no position to lecture us on this issue” because Moscow “supports regimes that sponsor terrorism around the world.”
“The United States has been fighting the scourge of terrorism for decades and will continue to fight the scourge of terrorism,” he said.
