Nationally ranked children’s hospital in nine pediatric specialties and #2 in North Carolina
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC Children’s in Chapel Hill, N.C., has been ranked among the top children’s hospitals in the nation for 16 consecutive years as evaluated by U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” report. UNC Children’s ranks in 9 of 11 pediatric specialties nationally in 2024-2025.
To be considered a “nationally ranked” hospital, a hospital’s specialty must rank within the top 50 hospitals in the United States. Locally, UNC Children’s is ranked the No. 2 children’s hospital in North Carolina and No. 4 in the Southeast region.
New Pediatric Rankings: Behavioral Health
This year’s U.S. News rankings include a new specialty: Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health, the first specialty added to Best Children’s Hospitals in more than a decade and a half.
UNC Children’s is recognized as one of the first class of best children’s hospitals in the country for child and adolescent behavioral health.
As U.S. News explains, its approach to evaluating the specialty was driven by input and encouragement from pediatric health leaders and a strong awareness of consumer demand for information.

In the 2024-2025 rankings, 88 hospitals ranked highly in at least one pediatric medical specialty.
This year’s rankings were created based on data collected through clinical surveys sent to children’s hospitals and surveys sent to thousands of pediatric physicians nationwide.
