PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle announced that the school has earned a top four spot on U.S. News and World Report’s 2025 Best Colleges list. In this year’s annual rankings, UMPI was ranked in the top tier of Best Regional Universities in the North, the 20th Top Public School in the North, the Top 10 Regional Universities in the North for Graduates with Lowest Debt, and the Top 30 Regional Universities. In the Northern Region’s Best Regional Universities ranking, UMPI was ranked 35th, achieving Tier 1 status. The ranking defines regional universities as schools that focus on undergraduate education but award fewer than half of their degrees in liberal arts. The northern region includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
UMPI was No. 19 on the Northern Regional Universities top public school rankings list. The ranking defines public universities as those that typically operate under the supervision of a state government and are funded in part by state taxes or grants. Such universities often offer free or reduced tuition to students who are considered residents of the state.
The university ranked in the top 10 for graduates with the least debt on the Northern Regional Universities list. U.S. News has compiled a list of schools whose 2020 and 2021 graduates graduated with the least debt. This data included loans owned by the U.S. Department of Education, which is the majority of student loans. UMPI came in at No. 8, making it the first state from Maine and all of New England to make the list.
Finally, in U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of Top Performers on Social Mobility, UMPI ranks 24th among Northern regional universities, moving up seven spots. The rankings measure how well students who received federal Pell Grants (a grant typically received from households with annual household incomes of less than $50,000) graduate from each school. .
U.S. News and World Report has been publishing the Best College Rankings since 1983. According to its website, this ranking is an excellent starting point for families looking for the best academic value for money, allowing them to compare relative quality at a glance. We rank institutions based on widely accepted indicators of excellence, such as new student retention, graduation rates, and faculty strength.
