The thief targeted the University of Miami Sports Power Couple and stole three luxury cars overnight in Miami-Dade, southwest, Miami-Dade, authorities said.
UM quarterback Carson Beck and basketball player Hanna Cabinder were among the people who were stolen high-end vehicles, Lamborghini, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz — officials said.
Neighbor Doris Renell spoke when he heard the news. “I heard that some cars had been stolen and I was surprised that it was a University of Miami quarterback,” she said.
Mercedes-Benz was recovered at a nearby apartment, and it turns out that Land Rover isn’t too far from the scene. Authorities noted that it is not uncommon for stolen vehicles to be near the stolen location.
Suspicion of an organized theft ring
Major Ignacio Alvarez, who is not involved in the retired Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigation, said the robbery method refers to an organized theft ring.
“They usually park their vehicles and let them sit for a few days. They know they have targeting devices if the vehicle is picked up, Alvarez said.
“I think it’s strange that three cars were filmed at the same time. This tells us that this is an organized thing. You use a three-person tow truck or a team of six to ten people. I’m doing that,” he added.
Alvarez noted that the incident is the latest in a series of prominent thefts targeting sports celebrities. “We’ve seen similar cases as NFL and NBA players, but these organized crimes are easy to target individuals as social media makes personal information readily available. I feel there is,” he said.
The FBI is investigating similar cases nationwide, but it is not yet clear whether this case is related to other cases.
