In U.S. News’ 2025 Best College Rankings released Tuesday, the University of Wisconsin-Madison ranked 39th overall out of 438 private and public doctoral programs and 13th among public universities.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s overall ranking fell slightly from 35th place in 2024, but was still 10 places higher than 49th place in 2019. Its ranking among public universities dropped one place from last year’s 12th place.
This year’s U.S. News rankings prioritized what they called a school’s “social mobility,” or academic and occupational success based on debt and income after graduation. Other key factors include faculty research, values, standardized test scores, resource availability, and opportunity.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s engineering program ranked 13th, and its business school program ranked 18th overall. Wisconsin School of Business’ real estate program ranked #1 in the nation.
The university’s undergraduate programs in computer science, economics, nursing and psychology also ranked in the top 30.
“We are proud that our rankings continue to recognize our success in providing a high-quality education across a variety of disciplines,” UW-Madison President Jennifer Mnookin said in a press release. “That being said, rankings are just one of many measures of success for any school, including ours.”
