No wonder my son still talks about that green Kelly 1936 Ford Phaeton years later. Parked in the driveway of Sheen Falls Lodge, it is ready to take guests into the characteristic Kenmare village for some shopping. The car is part of our family’s lore, an exhibit at Ireland’s Relais & Châteaux, with memories of the hotel’s friendly staff with its light accents and waterfall views from its expansive suite. It created an unforgettable memory of a visit long ago. .
Frankly, I was worried that I would return if a retreat was not appropriate. However, the anxiety was in vain. I happened to arrive last October, just as Sheen Falls Lodge was one of the first hotels in the world to receive two Michelin Keys for the best hospitality on earth.
If the hallmark of a first-class hotel is that it manages to change with the times while keeping its soul intact, this former fisherman’s hut fulfills that mission. Although elegantly modernized, this five-star wonder retains a certain comforting sameness that you feel when you put on a vintage tweed coat, or return home on a family vacation, full of old traditions. I realized that I was wrapped up in my sexuality without fear. After all, it’s the atmosphere that visitors to the Irish countryside long for.

Similarly, during the same excursion to Ireland, I revisited Merion. As Dublin’s unique Georgian jewel box, this stately hotel continues to pay clear homage to noble urbanity. Brimming with Irish spirit, it welcomes guests without being formal or overly formal. Grand, yet intimate, The Merrion always maintains an up-to-date feel.
Over the years, it has subtly and subtly reinvented itself, like an art restorer revising a masterpiece. Modern changes and transitions are woven into the current state of the place (including new restaurants and a spa), ensuring The Merrion remains relevant to a new generation of travellers. At the same time, the hotel has never turned its back on its incredible history.
Different from each other, these two Irish hotels offer separate but equally luxurious parts of the Emerald Isle. Soak up the slow, cheerful pace of the hinterland at Sheen Falls Lodge, or enjoy the elegant whispers of sophisticated city living at The Merrion.

In no time, you settle into a cozy nook and turn off your phone to pay attention to more important things. The hypnotic sounds of the famous waterfall, a piano player, an owl hoot, and a bartender stirring a martini in the hotel’s cocktails. my own gin. Sheen Falls is 300 acres rich with trails dotted with picturesque locations (and landmarks), including a boathouse, graveyard, canoodling benches, a huge library, and a fun and volatile cocktail bar with a view. Situated on blissful grounds, the old and new blend effortlessly.
Modernized and cleverly reconfigured, it feels charmingly old and cheerfully new at the same time. The dedicated and talented staff (some of whom have been with the hotel for decades) will make you want to come back just to chat with them one more time.

It consists of 77 rooms and suites, including two separate villas and three cottages (two with thatched roofs), with rooms in both the original lodge and new buildings. I stayed in Oscar’s Suite, a stunning haven measuring approximately 1,000 square feet. Luxuriously appointed, the centerpiece was the French doors leading out to its own waterside garden terrace adjacent to a waterfall.

The Merrion, Dublin
As you trek through Dublin’s Georgian quarters, you might pass The Merrion and assume it’s a high-rise mansion, the home of a regal homeowner. Of course, that’s part of the appeal. It feels residential and upscale, almost like a private club.
