CNN has also issued detention orders for nearly 100 individuals connected to Imamoru, including his press advisor Mumamo Ongan, who cited local media Anadoru as his report.
The prosecutor’s office said the court had decided to run a criminal organization, accept bribery, accept fear tor and put Imamoal in prison on suspicion of illegal records of personal data and bid rigging. Following the court’s ruling, Imamor was transferred to Silibri prison west of Istanbul.
Imamor was elected mayor of Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, and was re-elected in 2024. He is the presidential candidate for the People’s Party of the opposition Republican Party. The party said the accusations against him were politically motivated and described them as “an attempt at a coup.”
In X’s post hours before his incarceration, Imamol wrote: “The wall of fear has been overcome. Now there is a nation,” refers to a protest scheduled at Sarachan Park in Istanbul on Saturday night.
