Donald Trump said he appreciated Volodyme Zelenkie’s willingness to sign a minerals contract with the United States and come to the negotiation table to bring the lasting peace in Ukraine closer.
“Today I received an important letter from Ukrainian President Zelensky,” the US president said in a speech to Congress after a disastrous meeting at the White House last week. Quoting from the letter, Trump said Zelensky “we will bring lasting peace closer as Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiation table as soon as possible. No one wants peace more than Ukrainians.”
“My team and I are ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership and to have the peace that continues,” Trump quoted Zelensky as writing. “We really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence.”
Trump also said he was having a “serious discussion with Russia” and claimed that “they received a strong signal that they were ready for peace.”
“Isn’t that beautiful?” he said. “It’s time to stop this insanity. It’s time to stop the murder. It’s time to end this pointless war. If you want to end the war, you have to talk to both sides.”
Comments have ordered a pause on all US aid to Ukraine after a clash in the oval office that softened Trump’s language slightly in Ukraine.
Trump was expected to further outline his plans for Ukraine and Russia in his speech to Congress, but he did not give further details.
In the same speech, Trump said he would control Greenland “in some way,” adding that the US is ready to accept people on Danish territory.
He defended recent foreign policy moves, including the introduction of new tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau called “a very stupid thing.”
Trump insisted that the US “recovers” the Panama Canal, “we’ve already started it.”
The US President said that Greenland, where the US is managed by Denmark, needs it for “national security and even international security,” and said, “I think we’ll get it – in some way, we’re going to get it.”
“There’s a message to the incredible people in Greenland tonight,” he said in his speech that Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson smiled behind him. “We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you to the United States of America.”
“We’ll keep you safe,” he said. “We’ll make you rich.”
On the Panama Canal, he responded positively to the news that its Chinese headquarters had sold two ports near the canal to American-owned BlackRock. Trump claimed that the port could be used to exercise Chinese control over the canal, saying the canal was “built for Americans for Americans, but not for others.” But others can use it. ”
“We didn’t give it to China. We handed it to Panama and we’ll get it back,” he said during his speech.
He also gave his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, a backhand tribute. Marco Rubio recently traveled to Panama during a tour of Latin America, focusing primarily on migration and efforts to regain control of the canal.
“Marco Rubio is in charge,” Trump said happily. “Lucky, Marco. Now we know who to blame if something goes wrong.”
