NEW ULM — Worthington defeated New Ulm 25-17, 25-18, 25-19 on Friday in a nonconference volleyball match.
It was the Eagles’ ninth straight loss since defeating Fairmont on September 12th.
“We were really sluggish. In the third set, we played a lot better.” Ulm’s new manager Christine Skoglund said: She added that the Eagles have struggled to finish things.
Despite that slump, the Eagles had some good digs, sets and returns. He also dived for loose balls. The Trojans fought back with a strong serve and a good set of their own, making some strong ball returns and keeping the Eagles on their toes.
In the first set, New Ulm held a narrow lead for about half of the set. Worthington fought back to regain the lead with three consecutive misses. Jaden Spartz’s ace extended the lead to three points.
Mackenzie Enter tipped the ball to Lauren Schmiesing, cutting the Trojans’ lead to two points at 15-13.
They answered with a kill streak. Natya Kamphan set up Saige Scheepstra in the first match. Caitlin Mulder set up Shapestra for the next rally.
Enter then won the point with a left-handed tip and an ace on the next play, but the Trojans scored the final five points to take the set.
Worthington made mistakes early in the second set, giving New Ulm its final lead of the night at 6-5. The Eagles tried hard to catch up, but Worthington slowly pulled away. Campaine set up Spurtz for a kill and won the set.
Both players made adjustments in the third set. They also made adjustments on the fly that led to a competitive rally and a good result for both teams.
Schoepstra rolled the ball over the net with his back to the net for Worthington’s 24th point. In the next rally, Campine hit Schoepstra with the ball, and Schoepstra’s kill ended the set and the match.
Enter had five set assists, 10 digs and one block assist. Schmiesing added 3 kills, 3 digs and had 2 blocks. Makenna Meyer had three kills and Brooklyn Lewis had eight digs and one block.
New Ulm (1-17, 1-4) heads into a Big South showdown with Fairmont on Tuesday.
