TR Photo by Ross Thede – West Marshall senior forward Lily Zahnd (22) has two of the two career 20 points at the state center on Saturday night for the Trojans’ 61-24 region women’s basketball. To go to Josie Bergmeier of Union.
Zarnd was definitely the case when a basketball fan from Young West Marshall Girls yelled at her in a quarter-final match against the Class 3A Region 3 Union Community on Saturday.
The Trojan senior scored the team’s first 10 points in West Marshall’s postseason opener to match her career-high 20 points with 20 points.
Zand was so trapped that she hadn’t even heard the future Trojans screaming for her admiration.
“Many of us were a bit nervous, despite the fact that we should have won, but our pace was a little slow at first,” said 5-foot-11. “We were nervous and nervous, so if we scored and started doing good things like normal it was better.”

Zand left and ran, and Union (2-21) couldn’t keep up. West Marshall (17-5) used that pace and pressure to end the Knights’ season after a front and back start with Union leading 7-4.
The Trojans attacked the posts and began using the height advantage, followed by a 13-0 run. Zahnd scored the first six points of that sprint, which saw West Marshall take a 17-7 lead from a 3-point deficit.
It was a 15-0 Trojan surge that kicks off the second quarter and 26-4th quarter of West Marshall, which will host West Delaware (14-8) in the regional semi-finals on Wednesday night at the state center.
“Along with our team and people, all we can do every night is run a courthouse, see what our advantages are and use it as much as we can,” says West Marshall. said head coach Cody Hackett. “Tonight was big. We knew he had the advantage of height inside too, so we really gave it to our post and gave our girl confidence there I was trying to get it.
“As a staff member, if they succeeded there, they would sometimes open the shots outside, so overall it’s good night.”

Shelby Johnston joined the score after Zarnd scored six straights in the lane to kick off the Trojans’ 13-0 run. Halle Jones followed with three pointers, and Bella Borgos took the inbounds passing an unsuspecting union defender to make it 17-7, the last in the first quarter.
West Marshall’s press raised pressure in the second quarter, creating nine union turnovers, leading to a fast opportunity for the Trojans. Borgos, Jones and Kinreg Johnston added three pointers to the mix, and the Knights were late by age 30 at halftime.
“Our press has really worked out tonight,” Zand said. “We could lock them up and steal them, I think we could make a basket.
West Marshall scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, then delved deep into the bench to prepare for the next round.
“We knew Union would be tired. We knew they didn’t play a lot of girls, so if we could go up and down the coat and wear a little, we’d be in a good place. Let’s end it,” Hackett said. “It’s a fun evening and a fun atmosphere and we’re moving ahead at the end of the day.”

Zahnd finished with a 20-point double double and 10 rebounds, reaching 13-10 from the field, chipping in with three assists and two steels.
“She played really well tonight,” Hackett said. “That’s what we expect from her every night to make ourselves and our team successful. We’ve had a lot of conversations with her, and she’s more of a teammate than she is. She’s a shy girl who likes to make for. To use your athletic abilities to do everything she knows she can, and she did it tonight.”
Already committed to NCAA Division II Lincoln University Borgos has totaled 11 points, six steels, five rebounds and five assists. Nelle Kemmerer scored seven points off the bench, Jones hit a pair of three-pointers, and Shelby Johnston also finished with six points.
Senior guard Lily Lorenzen scored half of the team’s 24 points in the final game. Reagan Glenn added six points to the Knights’ 11th straight loss.
