TOKYO – TOPPAN Digital Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as TOPPAN Digital), a Toppan Group company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Toppan Holdings Co., Ltd., will exhibit at LUXE PACK Monaco 2024, an international trade fair for luxury packaging to be held in Monaco from September 30 to October 2.
TOPPAN Digital has exhibited at LUXE PACK Monaco every year since 2019, showcasing solutions based on high-security NFC tags (authenticity determination and opening detection) and ID authentication platforms. This year, the focus will be on cosmetics, with a lineup of digital solutions that solve challenges in the luxury cosmetics industry, such as balancing brand differentiation with labor savings and improving customer service.

Competition in the cosmetics industry is intensifying due to new brands and entrants from other industries, and there is an increasing need to create unique brand stories and value to differentiate. As a tool to influence consumer purchasing decisions, there is a demand for packaging that highlights the appeal of products and solutions that create customer touchpoints for brand stories. Meanwhile, some brands are being forced to create new customer touchpoints and strengthen customer services while reducing staff for store operations due to labor shortages and rising labor costs.

Solutions for stores
When consumers pick up an NFC-tagged product from the dedicated display, video content will play on the screen, allowing them to experience the brand’s worldview and story. By incorporating product information into the video, product details can be communicated to consumers on the spot, which also leads to a reduction in the number of in-store explanation staff. In addition, the number of times a customer picks up a product can be recorded as data, making it possible to devise specific measures for products that are frequently picked up.
NFC Tag with LED for Cosmetics Packaging
When a smartphone is held over an NFC tag with an LED, the LED lights up. If a tag is incorporated into a container such as a compact case or the mirror part of a cosmetic box, the LED lights up when the consumer holds the smartphone over the tag. This not only gives the container a luxurious feel, but also differentiates it by providing a new experience to consumers.
Smart packaging with integrated NFC functionality
By incorporating NFC tags into the structure of paper packages, security can be strengthened while maintaining the design. The opening detection function built into the NFC tag can inform consumers whether the package has been opened. It can also be used as a tool to build new customer contact points, such as providing limited information and special offers to those who purchase products.
Product ID authentication platform
The cloud-based service uses consumers’ smartphones to scan the ID devices of individual products, enabling a range of services including providing product information, verifying authenticity, promoting products, etc. The data collected can be used to facilitate supply chain management, including traceability and monitoring for grey market diversion.
