The opening of the 119th Congress on Friday made South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott the longest-serving Black senator in the United States.
Scott will also serve as the first Black chairman of the Senate Standing Committee and lead the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, which was the top Republican on the committee last time Democrats controlled the chamber. He was a senior member of parliament.
