He surpassed the 118 mark in 2007-08 by Chris Lofton. UCLA made the earliest exit from the tournament during his six-year tenure as manager Mick Cronin.
Philadelphia (AP) — Pennsylvania’s Carter Starch wins the fifth national title, with Oklahoma’s Wyatt Hendrickson stunning Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson 5-4. Hendrickson, a transfer from the Air Force, was relegated to a takedown score in the final minute in the evening’s final game. Pennsylvania claimed a third four-peat, fled the field and claimed 12th men’s division I men’s wrestling national title coach Cael Sanderson. Nebraska came in second and Oklahoma was third.
DENVER (AP) — BYU endured a ferocious accusation from Wisconsin’s John Tonge and held back the badgers for the 91-89 victory, sending the program to Suite 16 for the first time since 2011. Tonje was the first player to fall below 30 points in the madness this March. Richie Sanders scored 25 with the sixth seed Cougars.
DENVER (AP) — Michigan returned to the Sweet 16 a year after a 24-failing season and defeated the Texas A&M 91-79 in the NCAA Tournament using Roddy Gale’s surge. Gale scored 21 points of a season-high 26 points in the second half, helping the refilled Wolverine overcome a 10-point deficit and advance to Atlanta to face the Southern Regional winner of Auburn Crichton. Vladislav Goldin scored 23 points and 12 rebounds. Michigan, the fifth seeded, overcomes the big day of Pharrel Payne, who led the Texas A&M with 26 points in 10-13rd shooting. With an incredible run at the Big Ten Tournament title, Wolverine won for the fifth time in nine days.
SEATTLE (AP) – In the recent past, the NCAA Tournament Select Committee has tried to avoid facing Oregon in the second round of March Madness. However, they were no longer rivals in the conference, so the former Pac-12 team was placed in the same section of the bracket in the Eastern Region. The winner of Sunday’s matchup will move to Sweet 16 in Newark, New Jersey, facing top-seeded Duke or No. 9 seed Baylor. The Duck has never played the Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament. Also in the eastern part, the second seed Alabama is set to face the seventh seed St. Mary.
RI (AP) – Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Purdue made a quick start to McNeese for a 76-62 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Fletcher Royer added 15 points, while CJ Cox finished with 11 points for the boiler maker. Purdue meets top-seeded Houston in the Midwest semi-finals. Matt Painter is appearing as Purdue coach, heading for the eighth Sweet 16 in the 16 NCAA tournaments. Sincere Parker scored 17 points leading the McNeese.
CLEVELAND (AP) – The team hasn’t faced each other in four years, but the praise of Michigan’s Tom Izo and New Mexico’s Richard Pitino has not diminished. Their respect for each other will be put on hold for several hours on Sunday night as Izzo and Michigan face Pitino and New Mexico in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Izzo became friends with Pitino during his eight-year tenure as a young coach in Minnesota. Izzo believed that the son of Hall of Fame’s son Rick Pipino had made progress towards building a competitive program in the Big Ten.
Austin, Texas (AP) – Genesis Bryant scored 17 points, while No. 8 Illinois won the 25-year NCAA Tournament victory on Saturday night, 66-57 on No. 9 Clayton. Illinois’ tough defenses irritated Clayton’s external shooter as Illini ruled the rebound. Kendall Bostic added 12 points and 17 rebounds to Illinois. Morgan Murray led Clayton with 18 points, while Lauren Jensen scored 17. However, the Blue Jays top scorer was included in mostly long stretches throughout the season. Clayton came within two people early in the third time before Illinois answered with a consecutive three-pointer from Brynn Shoepe Hill.
