Acura
When you think of electric vehicles, Acura isn’t the first automaker that comes to mind. Honda’s luxury brand was a late entrant into the EV world, making its presence known in the space with the launch of its first EV, the Acura ZDX, in August 2023. Both the Acura ZDX and its sibling, the Honda Prologue, are the result of a collaboration between Honda and General Motors, allowing the Japanese automaker to utilize GM’s Ultium platform for electric vehicles.

When I first drove the 2024 Acura ZDX earlier this year, it felt like, at best, a stopgap model designed to allow Acura to enter the EV world. Honda also confirmed that its blend of convenience with GM’s Ultium platform wouldn’t extend beyond the first-generation Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX, a clear indication that Honda is working on its own EV platform.

This new EV platform appears to be in the final stages of work after Acura released a teaser for what appears to be a new concept electric vehicle called the Acura Performance EV Concept on August 9, 2024. A week later, on August 15, 2024, Acura finally took the wraps off this new EV concept car. Acura describes the Performance EV Concept as a “dramatically engineered” SUV that will serve as the basis for its next-generation all-electric vehicle, scheduled to debut in 2025.

The Acura Performance EV Concept is an all-new EV-SUV designed by the Acura Design Studio in Los Angeles, California. Its striking appearance is accentuated by its coupe-like stance, teardrop cabin and sculpted profile. Notable styling elements of the vehicle include an upswept decklid at the rear and full-length tail lights and diffuser combination. Acura branding appears in bold across the tailgate, which could be a revamped symbol for future Acura EVs.

Some of the styling elements seen in this vehicle will eventually be featured on a production version of the electric vehicle that Honda plans to release in 2025. Honda declined to release a spec sheet for the Acura Performance EV Concept, but did reveal that the vehicle will ride on massive 23-inch wheels shod with 295/35R23 high-performance tires.
The next-generation Acura EV will also mark the debut of Honda’s in-house developed electric vehicle platform when it hits the market in 2025. The company also announced that these new EVs will be produced at Honda’s new EV hub in Ohio, nearby where a battery manufacturing plant jointly developed by LG Energy Solutions and Honda will also be built.

Acura plans to debut the performance EV concept at various events in 2024, including motorsports enthusiasts’ gathering The Quail and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. While it’s too early to comment on how consumers will react to Acura’s upcoming performance EV, there’s no denying that Acura’s competitors are watching the new product intently.
