According to Guinness World Records, Tomiko Itooka, a 116-year-old Japanese woman who became the oldest living person in August 2024, passed away on December 29, 2024. Her death was confirmed by Guinness World Records on Saturday.
Mr. Itooka was awarded the world’s oldest person certificate in September 2023. According to Guinness World Records, Itooka was born in Osaka on May 23, 1908.
She attended an all-girls high school and played volleyball. According to Guinness, she was 32 years old when Japan entered World War II and was managing the offices of her husband’s textile factory.

Her family told Guinness that her longevity was due to her active lifestyle. She continued to climb mountains even when she was 100 years old. She also lived at home with her two daughters until she was 110 years old.
The title of world’s oldest person currently goes to Ina Canavarro Lucas, also 116 years old. She was born on June 8, 1908 in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She was born two weeks after Itooka.
During her 10th birthday in 2018, she received an apostolic blessing from Pope Francis. According to Guinness, she is one of only three people born in the 1900s still alive.
