The US joined Russia and voted against a UN General Assembly resolution denounced Russia’s war against Ukraine on Monday, in a spectacular shift from long-standing US policies.
The vote for a Ukraine and European solution led the US to confront longtime European allies, instead lining up with invaders in the war on the third anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The United States voted in the same way as Russia later Monday in a United Nations Security Council resolution proposed by the United Nations Security Council that did not call the Kremlin an invader or disapprove of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The resolution was passed without the support of five European members of the Security Council.
The shocking collaboration with America with Russia came when the Trump administration pursued a discussion with Moscow about ending the war. President Donald Trump has expanded his rhetoric towards Ukrainian President Voldy Zelensky. European partners are in a hurry to adapt to changing US policy, with French President Emmanuel Macron meeting with Trump at the White House on Monday.
The European-backed General Assembly resolution was adopted with 93 votes. “The Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has been ongoing for three years, with devastating and long-term consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for other regions and global stability,” he said. He stated that he was a “call”. Escalation, an early halt of hostility, a peaceful resolution of war against Ukraine. ”
It also calls for Russia to “immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw all troops from Ukrainian territory within the internationally recognized border.”
The United States had introduced a resolution for a general assembly of rivals, which called Russia an invader or did not recognize the integrity of Ukraine’s territory.
It “pleads for a quick end to the conflict and further encourages lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.” It laments the “tragic loss of life in the entire Russian-Ukrain conflict” and states “introducing it in the UN Charter.” As has been stated, the main purpose of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security and to resolve conflicts peacefully.”
The US introduced the same resolution at the Security Council. It was passed with 10 votes, including Russia, and five votes abstention after European efforts to delay the meeting. The amendment to strengthen the language added to the US General Assembly resolution was not passed by the Security Council due to a veto from Russia.
The ambassador to Russia’s UN Vasily Nebenja praised the short three-paragraph US resolution as a starting point for future efforts towards a peaceful reconciliation.
“The text we passed is not ideal, but essentially the first attempt by the council to have a constructive, future-oriented product that talks about the path to peace rather than blowing up conflict. That’s it,” he said.
US Dorothy Shea is called the Security Council’s first case to pass the resolution “settle the end of the conflict.”
“This resolution places us on the path to peace. This is the first step, but it is important, one of which is to build a peaceful future for Ukraine, Russia and the international community. “We should be proud to have to use it on,” she said after the vote.
However, Shea’s European counterpart had strong words in response to its passage.
“If the attack is rewarded, and if the laws of the jungle win, there is no peace and security anywhere,” said the French ambassador for the United Nations Nicolas des Rivieres.
“No one wants more peace than Ukraine, but the conditions of that peace are important,” said the UK ambassador Barbara Woodward, United Nations. “Only peace that honors the conditions of our charter can endure.”
“And the conditions of peace must send a message that aggression will not pay. This is not an equality between Russia and Ukraine as to how this council refers to this war. That’s why,” she said. “If we find a way to sustainable peace, the Council must clarify the origins of the war, and we owe it to the people of Ukrainians.
“Russia has chosen to launch a war of attack on sovereign states, but today we are once again trying to obfuscate that fact,” Woodward said.
“The end of this war could only be decided through negotiations with Ukraine. Peace is not sustainable without Ukraine’s consent,” she said.
Earlier in the day at the General Assembly, Siah urged member states to support the US resolution, saying that the US “cannot support the Ukrainian resolution, and that we should end the war and strive to end the war. We support the strong statement we promise and encourage retreat. Enduring peace.”
The US has decided to refrain from its own resolution at the General Assembly after several amendments were passed prior to the vote to strengthen its language against Russia and reaffirm the integrity of Ukraine’s territory. .
